Coming from an Indian family, one would surely have a distinct memory of when one had a sneeze while it was cold outside. Before anyone could grab anything to cover oneself, one's grandmother or mother would be busy in the kitchen making something warm and aromatic.
The answer to that magical potion lies in Kadha or traditional Indian spiced teas.
For foreigners or those living outside of India, this traditional type of Indian spiced tea may be something entirely new that they have discovered.
You see, even though it is termed as Indian spiced tea, there is no presence of tea leaves in it. It is just the right blend of authentic Indian spices in the right proportion, which helps to get rid of inflammation, dryness, and irritation in the throat, along with having many other health benefits.
The best thing about it is that there is no need for a special apothecary to produce it. You can use what you have in your spice box and make yourself a cup right away.
Recipe for "Cold Buster" Kadha
So, here is the recipe to make kadha and keep yourself warm during the chilly winters.
Items Required:
Water 2 cups
Chunk of Fresh Ginger
4 or 5 Black Peppercorns
2 to 3 cloves
A stick of Cinnamon
A small pinch of turmeric powder
5-6 leaves of holy basil
A small amount of honey or jaggery to give a sweet taste
The 3-Step to the Brew
Patience is key to making an excellent Kadha. You do not want to just steam the water; you would like to get the essential oils from the herbs.
1. The Crush:1minute
Grind the whole spices such as ginger, black peppercorns, and cloves into a coarsely ground powder.
2. The Gently Simmered: 10 to 12 minutes
Now it is time to simply boil water and put a few spoons of this mixture of ground spices that you have prepared. This is what will create the magic. After putting the ground spice mixture in the water, it is time to reduce the flame of the oven and simply let it simmer for around 10 to 12 minutes on low to medium heat so that the entire liquid reduces by half.
3. Final Step: 1 minute
Now filter out the ground spices and pour the liquid into your cup, and as per your taste, you can add a small amount of honey or jaggery.
