The University of Aberdeen Aviation and Space Medicine Society is proud to present 'Introduction to Space Medicine', a lecture series in collaboration with the Paraboladies! ? 'Introduction to Aviation Medicine' is the third seminar in this series, and will be given by the incredible Maia Gummer! Maia has a BSc in Human Sciences and an MSc in Space Physiology and Health, and up until recently, was an Officer in the Royal Air Force! In this instalment of our Temerty Medicine Talks series, join the Globe and Mail's André Picard in conversation with aerospace medicine expert Dr. Joan Saary as they discuss Canada and U of T's rich history in aerospace medicine, as well as what the future might hold for this far-reaching field.

Dr. Ashok Narayanamoorthi was a graduate of Class 1801 Scientist-Astronaut program of project PoSSUM (Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere) which is the world’s first and only crewed suborbital research program supported by NASA’s Flight Opportunities Program. Dr. Ashok successfully completed the rotation at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS), Utah, USA as Crew Flight Surgeon/Health & Safety Officer for Crew 192. Dr. Ashok is an analog astronaut with Mars Academy USA. He recently completed the rotation with MAUCrew1115 as Health & Safety Officer at Vasquez Rocks, California, USA. Dr. Ashok is the first Indian Citizen selected as a candidate for Project SIRIUS (Scientific International Research In the Unique terrestrial Station). This is launched by Russia’s Institute for Biomedical Problems (IBMP) in collaboration with NASA’s Human Research Program (HRP) along with other space agencies like ROSCOSMOS, CNES, DLR, etc. This program simulates the future Lunar Orbital Gateway platform. Lauren is doing her MSc Space Physiology and Health at King's College London. She chose to do a TEDx talk because what she does and what she wants to do isn't something that's generally talked about; when people think of space exploration they think of astronauts and rockets and robots, not the people behind the scenes keeping everyone healthy! It's something she has been passionate about for so long that she was so glad to have a platform through which to share with others. 12/16/2013 2013-2014 Series of Lectures on Astrophysics and Cosmology: science of the cosmos, science in the cosmos Lecture: "Astrobiology, the Quest for the Conditions of Life in the Universe" Synopsis: The over-riding objective of astrobiological research is to attain a better understanding of the principles leading to the emergence of life from inanimate matter, its evolution, and its distribution, thereby building the foundations for the construction and testing of meaningful axioms to support a theory of life. In the endeavor to quest for life on other celestial bodies of our solar system or beyond, clues can be gained from the history of our own biosphere and its strategies to adapt to changing and even "extreme" environmental conditions. Assuming water in liquid phase as universal prerequisite for habitability, the neighbor planet Mars, Jupiter's moon Europa and the growing number of extrasolar planets are now favored targets of astrobiological research.
