One of the initial questions that most packaging companies will ask when making custom tincture boxes is "Do you want a thumb-cut? It sounds harmless. A small half-circle cut-out at the side of your box. Convenient, right? Your customers will be able to easily retrieve the product and pull it out.

However, here's the ugly reality of which few packaging sellers will tell you. It is likely that your product doesn't require a thumb-cut. Indeed, one could be costing you money, undermining your box and damaging your brand image. Let's take a closer look at why this small feature is sometimes not necessary, and what you should do.

What is a Thumb-Cut?

A small curved cut out at the edge of a box, typically on the side or top flap, called a thumb-cut. It can provide a grip on your customer's finger so they can pull the inner product out with greater ease. They can be found on anything from tincture boxes to candle boxes to electronics boxes.

On the surface, it looks like a good idea. User-friendly. Considerate.

However, if you examine it more carefully, the thumb-cut is actually resolving a problem that is likely not often encountered. Most products will glide out of their place without it. Add the thumb-cut, however, and you add some issues that far outweigh the convenience.

The Real Problems with Thumb-Cuts

1. Weakened Structural Integrity

All of the cuts in cardboard will remove material. That is a weak point since it is a semicircular opening. During shipping, if a box is placed under other boxes, the weak spot may be crushed. The flaps may bend. The corners may lose their strength. Your product is dented and/or damaged on arrival.

This is particularly true of tincture boxes that are made custom. Typically tinctures are sold in glass bottles with droppers. Glass is heavy. Glass breaks. There's a need for maximum protection in your box. The opening into the side decreases the protection you paid for.

2. Added Manufacturing Costs

An additional manufacturing step is needed for each thumb-cut. The die cutting operation gets more complicated. Cutting tools wear out quicker. The extra labor time and machine time is paid for by the manufacturer.

You're paying more than they're seeing for something. If you are buying custom tincture boxes wholesale, this cost per box can really add up. If you need to spend money, you'll be better served if you invest in heavier cardboard, better print quality, or better materials that are less environmentally damaging.

3. Dust and Debris Entry

It's also a little door. Dust. Dirt. Moisture. All of these can get into your tincture bottle via the thumb cut. When it comes to health related products such as tinctures, cleanliness is essential. Your customers demand sealed and protected packaging.

A thumb cut will disrupt that seal. If an inner tray or insert is provided in a box, the cut still provides a direct route for contaminants.

4. Aesthetics and perceived value.

Consider luxury packaging. The expensive brands don't cut holes in boxes. They desire a smooth and "seamless" surface. Their goal is to have their logo and design flawless. A thumb-cut is a break in your artwork. Disrupts the visual flow. This will make the box appear less expensive.

Your personalized tincture boxes are a representation of your brand. Your packaging should be of a premium look if you want the customer to trust your product. A thumb-cut is the reverse. It exudes the vibe of cheap and cheerful. If you're selling quality tinctures, this isn't the message you want to send.

When is a “Thumb-Cut” Justified?

  • But we don't want to say thumb-cuts are always worthless. They do come in handy in certain circumstances.

  • Tightly packed inserts. Thumb-cut can be used when your product is so tight that customers have a problem taking it out.

  • Heavy / big items. The extra grip may be required for a heavy product that fits snugly in the box.

  • Retail shelf displays. A thumb-cut can will help the use of your carton if you place it on a shelf and customers must open it many times to view the product.

However, this is the crucial question. Are these some of the things your custom tincture box has to do? Most tincture bottles are light in weight. Most come with a dropper or opening that will provide your customer something to hold. Most of them are not so compact that it is impossible to remove.

Improved Alternatives to Thumb-cuts.

Rather than cutting a hole in your box, try these more clever alternatives.

Use a Ribbon Pull

A small satin ribbon is tucked under the bottle, providing a little something for your customer to pull. It looks elegant. It feels premium. It doesn't make your box weaker. It costs less than a die-cut modification, too.

Attach Inner Tray with Finger Gaps

Make small cut-outs at corners of your inner tray. Your customer does not need to have a hole in the outer box, they can pinch the bottle from the sides. This means you will have a smooth exterior but will still be able to remove easily.

Leave Extra Clearance

Often, the simplest solution is the best. Make your box a bit bigger on the inside. This small margin of tolerability is helpful when removing it without altering the structure.

The focus is on Better Printing.

Do not purchase a die cut thumb when you can make good quality printing work. Use metallic foils. Add soft-touch lamination. Use bold colors. These features will attract attention and convey quality. They make more of a difference for your brand than little finger hole ever will.

For Your Custom Thumb-cut boxes

When ordering custom thumb-cut boxes, you can choose one. One can do as the default suggests, and add a thumb-cut which is customary. Alternatively, you can consider critically whether your product really needs it.

It doesn't most of the time.

The bottles in which you are storing your tincture are small. They are lightweight. They feature caps/droppers that act as their natural handles. Your customers know how to open a box! Don't need to cut a hole for them to get through.

  • Rather, concentrate on what is important.

  • Material thickness. Use tough cardboard that will shield your glass bottles.

  • Perfect sizing. Make sure that your bottles are tight, but not too tight.

  • Beautiful branding. Ensure that your logo and design are prominent.

  • Sustainable choices. To appeal to buyers who are environmentally aware, use recycled or recyclable materials.

These are the factors as a whole which drive sales. They build trust. They remind customers of your brand. A "thumb-cut" does none of that.

The Bottom Line

Packaging should not only safeguard your product but also serve as a marketing tool to promote your brand. A thumb-cut is absolutely no help for either of those objectives. It makes you lose intensity in your box. It ups your price. Allows dust and dirt to get in. It lowers the quality of your packaging.

Your custom tincture boxes are a good investment. Treat them as a whole. Use budget to get materials and design that really count. Skip the thumb-cut. It's not necessary for your product. Frankly, your customers aren't going to miss your product.

When in doubt, try it out for yourself. Remove the standard tincture box, without thumb cut, and attempt to remove the bottle. Does it come out easily? If so, you've got your answer! If not, think about using a ribbon or an inner tray before you start using that die-cutter.

There are no better packages than ones that don't call attention to themselves. There is a discernible thumb cut. And not in a good way. Do not break your boxes. Keep them clean. Keep them beautiful. This is the way to create a memorable brand.
