The Ethics of Health Care Reform at Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics
30 views
Congress has been locked in debate over the last year about repealing the Affordable Care Act. There have been numerous controversies over the process used, as well as the outcome achieved. We will reflect on the changes and the rhetoric that has emerged around health and the government's role in providing a safety net. How should elected representatives weigh the short-term and long-term health care needs of their constituents in these contexts? What were the roles that health care providers and patients played in the debate, and how could they have been more effective?

John E. McDonough, DrPH, MPA
Professor
T.H. Chan School of Public Health

Raul Ruiz, MD

What is bioethics? | Philosophy, Medicine, and Clinical Ethics
41 views
Students at the University of Oregon learn how bioethics can bring some ease to difficult situations that occur in hospitals everyday. From the philosophy classroom to the hospital (PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, Springfield, Oregon) Professor Nicolae Morar and John Holmes (Director of Ethics for PeaceHealth) present students with some of life's most difficult questions.
Would it drive you crazy to hear your mechanical heart valve? How would witnessing open-heart surgery change your definition of being alive? Does quality of life affect the desire to be alive?
University of Oregon students in Professor Nicolae Morar's Philosophy 410 class spend the winter term learning about ethical issues that surface in a medical setting — by turning a hospital into their classroom. Includes interviews with Dr. Rajeev Alexander and Clinical Ethicist Laura Lyn Hosford (BS '15).

2024 George W. Gay Lecture in Medical Ethics: Bioethics in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
28 views
#ArtificialIntelligence is rapidly re-shapeing the landscape of #healthcare and biomedical research, prompting #bioethics to evolve in response. In this talk, Effy Vayena, PhD examines how AI introduces novel ethical challenges, urging bioethicists to broaden their scope of inquiry and adapt their methodological approaches. By exploring the shifts that AI brings in bioethics, she charts the opportunities that lie ahead for the field of bioethics and in return the role it can play in guiding responsible innovation and, ultimately, more compassionate and equitable healthcare.
Effy Vayena, PhD, is Professor of Bioethics and Associate Vice President for Digital Transformation and Governance at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Support provided by the Oswald DeN. Cammann Fund at Harvard University. This event was hosted on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at Harvard Medical School in the TMEC Amphitheater. Learn more about the George W.
