Collaboration. Communication. Critical thinking. Creativity. - Should be present in all classrooms. Joe Ruhl received his bachelors and masters degrees at Purdue University and he has been sharing the joys of biology with kids for 37 years. He presently teaches Biology, Genetics, and Science Research courses at Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Indiana. Joe and his wife Gail have two children and two grandchildren. The National Association of Biology Teachers named Joe Ruhl the Outstanding Biology Teacher of Indiana in 1987. In 1988 he was awarded a Golden Apple Teaching Award by the Lafayette, Indiana Chamber of Commerce. In 1989 he was honored at the White House as Indiana’s recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. In 1996 he received the Purdue University College of Science Distinguished Alumnus Award for Excellence in K-12 Science Teaching. In 2004 he was awarded the Purdue College of Education’s Crystal Apple Teaching Award. And in 2012 he was honored with the Shell National Science Teaching Award. The School of Art Art Education program presents artist educator Ariana Mygatt in their Art Education Action Lecture Series. Mygatt presents the lecture, 'Why 'Care'?,' sharing how she uses and explicitly teaches care as an approach to developing empathy and encouraging action in students' lives and communities. She asks the questions, when did caring become transgressive, and how can we re-center acts of care and love in a socially-engaged classroom? How can students use the lens of care to tackle social justice issues in a meaningful and transformative way? How can these ideas move beyond classroom assignments and into the everyday lives of our youth, during and after their time in our classrooms? Ariana Mygatt is an artist educator working professionally in public school art education and photography. She teaches four levels of photography at a high school in Baltimore County, Maryland. She holds a MA in Art + Education from New York University and a BA in Media Studies from Pomona College. She is an Art21 Educator, dedicated to collaborating with peers and teaching with contemporary art. She is also a wedding and portrait photographer through her project Outtakes Studio.

SMET - STEM - STEAM When I say Art and Design what do you think of? What is Art and why is it important? Jonathan Baker knows design. Over the past two decades he has designed over 50 products for the sporting goods and outdoor industry. As a freelance product designer he helped create new product categories, define market changing aesthetics and engineer disruptive technologies. He has worked with global manufacturers, with many of his designs being produced millions of times. He is the Founder of eqpd and is using this background in design and manufacturing to create a world with less waste. By making goods with universal aesthetics that are more durable, versatile and long lived, the need for disposable alternatives is reduced. A lifelong Artist, Jonathan is a board member of the Methow Arts Alliance and guest critic at his alma mater, the Rhode Island School of Design. Awarded an internship at Patagonia, he was fundamentally challenged by how to "use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis".
