RESISTIVITY AND CONDUCTIVITY
The resistance R of a conductor or a Resistor is the ability of the conductor to resist or oppose the flow of current through it
This resistance is directly proportional to the length L of the conductor and inversely proportional to the cross section area A of the conductor.
Mathematically,
, where p is the resistivity of the conductor
Therefore
The Resistivity of a conductor or a resistor can be defined as the resistance of the material or conductor of a unit cross section area and a unit length.
Conductivity
Conductor are the material that allow the free flow of electricity or current through them. The ability of a material to allow this free flow of current or electricity is called its conductivity.
Therefore conductivity and conductor are terms opposite to resistivity and resistor respectively.
All conductors offer some degree of resistance to flow of current, therefore conductors also have resistance.
Mathematically
The Conductivity of a conductor can be defined as the conductance of the material or conductor of a unit cross section area and a unit length.
Factor affecting resistance and conductance
The conductance and resistance of a conductor are depending on the following
- Length of the conductor L
- Cross section area of the conductor
- Resistivity or conductivity of the material (nature of the material of the conductor)
- Temperature
