For example if its Grey  followed by yellow , you will have 84 . The third is a power of 10 . for example if the third colour is also grey, it will now be  or if it is brown it will be    or orange it will be  To calculate  the value of a standard carbon resistor from the  table above using colour  code on the resistor, the first two bands (starting with the bands nearest to an end) are digits.

The fourth band indicates precision or tolerance. If the fourth is Gold it will be

 Example

What is the resistance of a resistor with colour   yellow, red, brown and silver ?

Yellow = 4

Red= 2

Brown= multiplier factor = 10

Silver = tolerance =

The resistance of the resistor is 42 x 10  = 420 = 410 Ω to 430Ω in range
