While the ever-expanding Honkai: Star Rail Accounts roster certainly drew me towards Hoyoverse’s turn-based RPG game, I quickly pointed out that the real stars of the show will be the trash cans – inanimate objects which have provided me with several laughs throughout my adventure.

And no, that isn’t a typo; I’m seriously dealing with trash cans. Scattered during the entire galaxy just as the stars themselves, these waste disposal units have won the hearts of Trailblazers from along the cosmos. Why? Well, they have got unique interactions that trigger once you approach them, and honestly, they’re absolutely priceless.

Honkai: Star Rail Accounts

“The old dumpster stands silently, carrying a unique resolute gravitas that reminds you connected with an elder of vast wisdom,” reads one instance. “It stood about the side on the street for several years, witnessing its fall and rise.” Given the number of opening it, leaving it alone, or paying respects, I chose to honor this age-old bastion of cleanliness, receiving the response “You bow at Elder Dumpster, this agreement responds having a deep dignity, it almost appears like it is the size two dumpsters.” Given you'll find, actually, two dumpsters sitting close to one another in-game, this cheeky little response prompted a bit of smirk, and I went about my Jarilo IV journey having a smile on my small face.

But sometimes – in support of sometimes – your, slightly trashy friends are able to offer a reward for reaching them. Upon approaching a waste unit hidden away inside the shadows from the underground, I’m met with an important decision: “The big rubbish bin lies in plain air. You can see it is often filled with citizens’ discarded trash. Suddenly, you hear a voice saying ‘Trailblazer, do you wish to see these seven normal waste trash or this beautiful little bit of trash?’”

I, needless to say, select the beautiful little bit of trash, which earned me Praise of High Morals, a somewhat useless but well-deserved prize for not exploiting the garbage can’s kindness. Don’t say I’m not really a nice person – even the trash has my back.

While the dazzling anime universe of Honkai will draw you in, it’s small things like this that will make you want to join every day. These seemingly inconsequential inanimate objects tell fun little stories (provide the person that wrote those lines a raise, Hoyoverse) while simultaneously encouraging exploration by dropping the odd item from time to time. They offer an original world-building experience that's simultaneously fun and rewarding, and in addition, they add a playful spirit to the game that I personally thought was somewhat lacking within the early era of Genshin Impact. Hoyoverse is adapting and evolving, and that’s exciting news since the developer is constantly building out its already impressive portfolio.

And I think it’s this whimsical spirit containing seen the Honkai fanbase swell post-launch. One look at the game’s subreddit shows drawings of the male and female Trailblazer standing in dumpsters, with fans comparing those to raccoons for their messy silver hair and hooded yellow eyes. Creating a great game is some things, except for it to ensure success you need to capture the imagination of players. Honkai has been able to do that with literal trash cans – quite the feat, isn’t it?
